Australians do it differently, and this certainly applies to Pattaya’s new arrivals in the food and beverage industry, who started their successful chain of value for money restaurants back in 1989. Their Australian General Manager, Michael Chick, has been no less successful and after 10- years with the worldwide MacDonald’s company group, he was the Coffee Club’s Australian National Sales Manager for five years.

The new “Coffee Club’s” Café, Bar & Restaurant has opened in a prime position inside the Second Road entrance of South Pattaya’s “Royal Garden Plaza,” delivering casual western dining at sensible prices, and there are even a variety of Thai dishes for just 89-baht each. However, the flagship of the “Coffee Club,” is their Italian “Exresso” coffees, that they proudly claim as been superior to all others, and their staff undergo intensive “Barista” training programs.

With precise measurement of all ingredients, heating is done to an exact temperature, which is further maintained by heating the coffee cups, so you can enjoy the taste of Pattaya’s best coffee, some top quality food at reasonable prices, plus a very spacious and relaxing environment. There are no hidden service charges or taxes, their Turkish bread is a specialty, and alcoholic drinks are also available. Separate breakfast, lunch and dinner menus are available all day from 8am until 11pm, so here is real service.

General Manager, Michael Chick, states that the “Coffee Club” staff are carefully trained to welcome all guests into their relaxed environment and treat them as friends and family. It was inspirational to hear an elderly English gentleman come up to the manager and say that after three days of dining at the “Coffee Club” he thought that the high quality and reasonable prices were the best that he had experienced. With such a powerful unsolicited recommendation, it seems certain that plans for worldwide expansion into new locations, such as China, India and the Middle East will be highly successful. The Australian management teams are very quick to make improvements and seize opportunities, which comes from their heritage of being a new nation with no fixed dogmas from past centuries, so they continually strive to be the best in all that they do.

The new Central Festival shopping mall on Pattaya Beach Road is the biggest beachfront shopping complex in S.E. Asia, and as such has attracted
many of the biggest brand name businesses in our part of the world. A case in point is the excellent range of restaurants on its 5th floor, and we take just four as an example of what to expect.

“Pepper Lunch” is a highly successful thirteen year old Japanese Restaurant chain with over 200-outlets spread over Japan, plus others in Korea, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore & Indonesia.

“Pepper Lunch” is completely different to other restaurants, because you can cook your own steak in a skillet, while enjoying the cozy atmosphere, with the slogan of “Sizzle it your way.” “Shimofuri pepper
steak” and “Salmon pepper rice” are two favourite dishes, with special offers such as their “Curry beef pepper rice with a large Pepsi” for 169 baht being excellent value, plus they have some interesting ice creams, such as green tea & black sesame flavours.

“Hawa (Our) Russia” is a traditional Russian restaurant with some excellent Eastern European dishes that will gladden the hearts of all westerners. For just 249 baht you can choose either a minestrone style or vegetable soup with meat balls, followed by a choice of beef goulash or a large serving of meat balls complete with mashed potatoes. Added to this is a “fruit-mors” drink that is available in a variety of tasty fruit flavours, and I am sure that the addition of some good Russian Vodka from their bar would help your enjoyable restaurant visit along no end.

“Mos Burger” are another Japanese based fine burger & coffee house, with an excellent slogan of “Make people happy through food,” with a large number of outlets in Bangkok. Burgers with meat, seafood, cheese or salad are their specialty, with prices being cleverlygrouped, depending on the base of the contents. One tasty new concept are lettuce burgers, which are served in lettuce instead of the usual bread roll, so if you prefer a lighter more healthy meal, this is the perfect answer for people on the move. Salads, soups and side dishes are available, and a Teriyaki chicken burger with French fries and a large soft drink is good value at 119 baht.

“Secret Recipe” is unique for being a dedicated cake & dessert shop, and also because this Malaysian based company has spread to Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China & the Philippines. Already with fifteen stands in Bangkok “Secret Recipe” produce every type of delicious cake imaginable, which
is no great surprise as they are Malaysia’s largest café chain. Winning the most competitive company award, has seen them introduce “health cakes;”(yes, you heard it right). This new range includes high fibre cheese cake, carrot slice with walnuts & raisins, sugar free chocolate cake, plus trans-fat free peach or blueberry cream cake; – still sounds pretty yummy.

You have probably now realized that the new Central Festival shopping mall on Pattaya Beach Road is not just another mega shopping complex in S.E. Asia, but has attracted many of the best fast food restaurants in the S.E. Asian food business. Of course these four food outlets are just part of a huge selection of what to expect, so take your family and friends for a 5th Floor visit; -you will not be disappointed.

Authentic Northeastern Dishes In Central Pattaya Early 2009 Café Chilli opened its second branch on the second floor of Central Festival Shopping Mall, Pattaya Beach. Inside, the walls have numerous dark wooden drawers, like a Chinese pharmacy, and the front window uses an abacus theme. The Relax team visited recently for lunch and we were warmly greeted by Khun Areeporn (Wan) the restaurant manager.

She brought us menus, and told us a little of the history of Café Chilli. A group of girl-friends, led by Khun Nawarat Sippapak wanted to raise the image of Northeastern cuisine from the misconception that it is only street food.

The girls knew that the food is a work of art with many contrasting flavours, and made correctly includes herbs and vegetables to provide healthy, non fattening food. The food includes chilli which is loaded with antioxidants, garlic to lower blood pressure, phakwan to fight cancer and fresh ingredients with many other essential nutrients.

On the tables there were colourful vegetable arrangements instead of the usual flowers. We looked through the menu which has a range of Isaan, Thai and Western dishes, and we noticed a choice of twenty different styles of Somtam! We tasted the somtam (papaya salad) with scallops, very tasty, and all prepared with fresh vegetables and herbs. Then we tried a different somtam served with black and white sticky rice.

Somtam is a social food, and it is clearly more fun to share it with friends. It is certainly popular with tourists. For a main course we enjoyed a sea bass, served with apple and mango freshly prepared dipping sauces. These were delicious and complimented the fish, and we left only bones on the plate when we had finished! Café Chilli offers you a chance to try genuine Northeastern style food, without the worries some tourists have about eating street food. If you think that Isaan food might be too spicy, ask the staff to make yours a little milder.

When we went along to the southern end of Jomtien Beach to visit the Rimini Restaurant, we did not just take our assessment team, we actually took our entire staff, because they were very keen to try the Rimini pizzas. No wonder, because they are baked in a natural wood fired pizza oven and the Rimini has all types from vegetarian through to delicious seafood and a wide range of meat toppings.

As soon as we arrived, the staff’s friendly manner immediately put us all at ease, because we were treated like part of the family and given a long table where we could watch the beautiful sunset over the Gulf of Thailand. However, it is not just the delicious crispy pizzas that sets the Rimini apart, but also the wide range of Italian and Thai food plus the extensive wine list. The spacious layout of the interior and terrace allows everyone complete freedom of movement, so that you can even watch your own pizza being prepared and then baked near the tables.

Our host Giovanni hails from Italy, but is a master Chef with many years of international experience and we could see that he had an intimate knowledge of the restaurant business. He brought out a huge basket of fish, just to prove to us that he insists that suppliers give him basic food items that are absolutely fresh.

This is of paramount importance if you want to deliver the tastiest dishes to your customers, but there are other features that
set this restaurant ahead of others.

When we saw one of the customer’s small girls sitting on the knees of the cashier while she was working, we realised that here was a true family style restaurant, which is dedicated to making everybody’s dining experience as pleasant as possible.

in Pattaya, the “Cafe des Amis” is tucked away between Soi 9 and 11 off Thappraya Road. This peaceful bistro and bar offers freshly prepared food in a Thai-Bali style setting.

Open every day, except Tuesday, from 4.00pm until late, with ample parking and a clear menu, an extensive wine list (56 labels from many countries) as well as a range of cocktails; what more can you ask for? The RELAX team was recently invited to Cafe des Amis, where we were greeted by Khun Pia (the Maître d’) who welcomed us into the bar and offered us aperitifs.

Once settled we were joined by the British owner, Mr. Blu, who explained some of the thinking behind des Amis. Blu’s passion for his restaurantwas clear; he has invested in comprehensive training for his staff, and this is a continuous process. The Executive Chef is Mark Rowe, from Britain, who has experience working in many countries over the last 25 years. With ten years in Paris kitchens, as well as in Australia and London, he is well qualified to produce the French – International style food. Customers are predominantly expats and their friends and visitors, but tourists are hearing about the Café and come to enjoy the relaxed ambience and food. Blu told us that two of the most popular dishes are the crab wraps (crab meat in lettuce with mango salsa) and the crispy duck, both starters. The food is mostly local and the portions generous.

The cafe has 38 seats in the dining room, plus 15 in the bar; (where snacks are available for sharing). In the courtyard alongside the garden are a further 12 seats, for people who prefer to be outside, or smoker The restaurant can help you arrange parties, whether they are corporate or private, and Blu is happy to help you to arrange suitable menus. Blu’s enthusiasm shows and his staff served us correctly; with perfect timing letting you enjoy your food and no snatching plates as soon as one person had finished. Cafe des Amis is a welcome addition
to the Pattaya dining scene, with fresh healthy food, reasonable prices and a calm atmosphere. Booking is recommended (038-364 327).

If one thinks Sunday brunch in Pattaya, Mantra Restaurant’s is likely to be on anyone’s short list. Its location certainly helps: it is located where Pattaya North Road meets Beach Road and is associated with the well known Amari Hotel.

But location is only part of the story because Mantra has some unique elements that make it very special for Sunday brunch. The RELAX team was recently invited to visit Mantra Restaurant and Bar and sample the Sunday brunch. Khun Ampawan Kuhasak, the Social Director of the restaurant showed us the fabulous Mantra hospitality. Khun Ampawan informed us about the new General Manger Mr. David Cummings, who is also taking care of Mantra. Although we had visited the restaurant before, the sheer size of Mantra still impresses us- it is certainly a grand scale for Pattaya.

The restaurant is attractively decorated, with cathedral ceilings and the room has nice red and orange shades. In short, the place lends itself to a nice meal with a large family or a group of friends. The dress code is more relaxed for the brunch and can accommodate both family and groups of friends.

Of course, the room is just the venue; food consumption is the goal. The Mantra brunch uses its size to advantage, with its varied offerings spread out along the perimeter of the room. The concept of a brunch fits well with the multiple kitchen concept of Mantra. Mantra is not a small restaurant trying to extend itself for a big event one day a week. Rather, the brunch format allows the restaurant to show off its multiple kitchens and cuisines. This seems a great way to get diners to sample the offered variety and quality.

Although normally we might have started with the Cereal Corner or the Egg Station, we instead plunged directly into the Ice carving area, where an assortment of fresh oysters on the half shell, prawns, rock lobster, and mussels awaited. We followed the fresh seafood

starter with more seafood at the sushi bar, where a assortment of Nigiri sushi and maki rolls were on offer. Following this, we made successive trips to the anti pasti station and enjoyed very nice marinated lamb chops and beef tenderloin from the Lava Stone Grill.

To close out the feast, we found the dessert buffet. In addition to seasonal fruit, we found the chocolate fountain, which made for a tasty chocolate- dipped fruit trip, in addition to some favorites like tiramisu and passion fruit mousse. Although quality food was in abundance, we found the staff at Mantra particularly attentive to us, offering to help us with ordering entrees and clearing our dishes promptly.

We left Mantra with one regret.

We simply could not try everything in one buffet outing; our stomachs simply would not allow it. Readers

should be aware that are also great Indian Tandoori, Chinese dumplings, pizza from a wood-fired oven, and many more selections from Mantra’s menu. But the quality of the offerings suggests we will be making a return trip to Mantra soon. Open for Sunday Brunch from 11am-3pm- For reservation call 038 429 591
