The good news for people with hypoglycemia, or a pre-diabetic condition, is that specific foods—plus a healthy diet—help stabilize blood sugar.

Let’s look at diet first because it’s foundational.

It is important to eat regular and moderate-sized meals. Don’t skip meals. Eat protein and an abundance of vegetables. Eat several servings per day of whole, unrefined grains; but otherwise limit carbohydrates, including fruit. Avoid fruit juice and the sweeter tropical fruits like pineapple and mangos.

Carbohydrates, the key is whole and underutilized like, quinoa, millet and buckwheat are good for you.

Because they may contribute to blood-sugar imbalances and a healing diet minimizes: alcohol, caffeine, juice, sweeteners and all common and refined grains. Additionally, consider what contributes to emotional, mental and physical balance in your life and make necessary adjustments to support a healthy lifestyle. Enjoy adequate sleep and regular exercise.

The following foods specifically help regulate blood sugar and therefore are good for people with hypoglycemia and diabetes:

BITTER MELON (มะระ= Mara) (As its name suggests, bitter melon tastes bitter. Bitter melon has a lumpy, ridged skin. It is a traditional diabetic remedy throughout the Far East. In clinical tests, bitter melon inhibits glucose absorption, increases insulin flow and has insulin-like effects.

ONION FAMILY All onion family members help regulates blood sugar so use them daily and with abandon. They include garlic, leeks, onions, ramps and scallions.

FENUGREEK (เมล็ดฟีนูกรีก = Mel̆d fīnū krīk) A popular spice throughout the Middle East and India, this legume is a common curry ingredient. It helps regulate sugar levels of non-insulin-dependent diabetics. Enjoy fenugreek as a tea or a spice. Or sprout these little seeds and substitute them for alfalfa sprouts in salads and sandwiches.

STEVIA (หญ้าหวาน= H̄ỵ̂ā h̄wān) A South American herb 30 times sweeter than sugar, stevia helps regulate blood sugar and blood pressure. It also suppresses dental bacteria and reduces mental and physical fatigue

SUNFLOWER FAMILY ROOT VEGETABLES The roots of sunflower relatives contain insulin, a natural fructose that helps diabetics lower their blood sugar.

RELAX Team wish you good health, for a professional medical check-up consider Bangkok Hospital Pattaya.

The Power Formula for Your Body and Mind
Power-napping, Cat-napping, Siesta – Call it what you like, but it’s been shown to be good for you.
A nap after lunch can be very beneficial: it can refresh your mind (and body) as well as making you smarter. Your boss may not approve, but many famous people have cat-napped: Margaret Thatcher, Bill Clinton, Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein.
You only need an hour or so, maximum, otherwise you risk upsetting your night time sleep. Quite a few countries traditionally had a siesta after lunch, especially during the warmer weather.
Sleep is believed to clear the short term memory, so you are refreshed and ready to start on new tasks or learning.
These are the main benefits of sleep, and power naps in particular:
1. Reduce Stress
Curling up somewhere comfortable or just putting your feet up for a quick snooze brings relaxation. Try to take a daily nap in some quiet, comfortable spot; even a short power nap can leave you feeling refreshed and re-energised.
2. Increase Alertness And Productivity
If you make time for a nap, you will feel more alert and energetic afterwards. Experiments have shown that even a 20-minute nap approximately eight hours after waking up will do more for your stamina than sleeping another 20 minutes in the morning.
3. Improve Memory And Learning Ability
A new study, involving college students, showed that a nap really improved their ability to learn. It really seems as if the brain benefits from the break, to clear out earlier thoughts and ideas from the short term memory.
4. Reduce Your Risk Of Heart Disease
A study of young men in Greece showed that a 30 minute nap, at least three times a week, reduced the risk of heart related death. Countries where siestas are the norm, are known to have lower levels of heart disease. As you fall asleep, your blood pressure drops, which for most people is a benefit.
Tips For The Best Nap:
Try to avoid caffeine and rich food for a couple of hours before you plan to nap. Find a suitable quiet, preferably dark and comfortable place to relax. Set an alarm to wake you, so you don’t worry about over-sleeping.
Remember that even a twenty minute sleep can refresh your system.

What can I do to protect myself from catching influenza A(H1N1)?

The main route of transmission of the new influenza A(H1N1) virus seems to be similar to seasonal influenza, via droplets that are expelled by speaking, sneezing or coughing. You can prevent getting infected by avoiding close contact with people who show influenza-like symptoms (try to maintain a distance of about 1 metre if possible) and taking the following measures:

• avoid touching your mouth and nose;
• clean hands thoroughly with soap and water, or cleanse them with an alcohol-based hand gel
on a regular basis (especially if touching the mouth and nose,
or surfaces that are potentially contaminated);
• avoid close contact with people who might be ill;
• reduce the time spent in crowded settings if possible;
• improve airflow in your living space by opening windows;
• practise good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.
What about using a mask? What does WHO recommend? If you are not sick you do not have to wear a mask.

If you are caring for a sick person, you can wear a mask when you are in close contact with the ill person and dispose of it immediately after contact, and cleanse your hands thoroughly afterwards. If you are sick and must travel or be around others, cover your mouth and nose. Using a mask correctly in all situations is essential. Incorrect use actually increases the chance of spreading infection.
Is it safe to travel? Yes. WHO is not recommending travel restrictions related to the outbreak of the influenza A(H1N1) virus. You are welcome to visit Thailand and welcome to Pattaya.

For more information visit WHO website http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/frequently_ asked_questions/what/en/index.html

The whitening of discoloured teeth is very common in cosmetic dental care today, and although these are plenty of whitening options over pharmacy shelves, treatments supervised by dentists are the safest option.

Contouring (tooth reshaping), is one of the many treatments now available in cosmetic dentistry, and this reshaping is normally done to rectify crooked, cracked, chipped, and overlapping teeth. This is done over one or more sessions, and the contouring procedure is sometimes carried ont as a substitute for braces.

When performed by a professional dentist, a few microns of surface reduction or a fraction of a millimetre of tooth-coloured laminate can create a beautiful smile, with no pain or discomfort. Dental Bridges known as “Pontics” are false teeth, which are fused between two porcelain crowns to fill up the gap created by a missing tooth.

Bridging is very commonly used in modern dentistry to replace one or more missing teeth. Ultra-thin, custom-made laminates, known as “Veneers,” are bonded directly to your teeth, and used as an option for filling the gaps or camouflaging discoloured teeth that cannot be repaired by normal whitening procedures.

“Gum Lift” is another popular cosmetic dental procedure that rectifies and sculptures the gum line, by reshaping the tissue and underlying bones to create the image of more symmetrical teeth.

Dental clinics are well equipped with all of the advanced equipment to provide solutions for you, and it is easy to buy a heart-warming smile. “Dental Paragon” on Pattaya Central Road and “DenteSmile” in The Avenue on Second Road are two clinics that specialise in cosmetic dentistry.

No one know exactly where the word spa comes from, but there are two main theories. One is that Spa is an acronym for the Latin phrase, “Salus Per Aquae,” or “health through water.” Others believe the origin of the word “spa” comes from the Belgian town of Spa, where the hot mineral springs were discovered by the ancient Romans and used by their soldiers to treat the aching muscles and wounds from battle. As the Roman Empire grew, so did the number of public baths. By the year 300 A.D, there were over 900 baths throughout the empire. The oldest Roman spa still in existence today is located in Merano, Italy, giving evidence that the Romans used natural springs in an organized manner to provide treatments.

Modern spas have their roots in ancient towns famed for the healing powers of their mineral waters and hot springs. Travellers would come to “take the waters” and restore their health. In the 19th century, Europe’s great spas were destinations for the wealthy, and water treatments are still considered the heart of the spa experience in Europe. Traditionally, Europeans have viewed spas as a venue for the treatment of present illnesses and the prevention of future ailments, and also placed special emphasis on the importance of spas in helping visitors relax by combating the stresses of everyday life.

In America the oldest spring used by the Mohawks is known as the Saratoga Hot Springs, meaning “the place of the medicine waters of the great spirit” in the native dialect. And in18th Century it was one of the first commercial spas in the New World.

Traditional American spas have maintained their focus on wellness, attracting individuals who are already healthy, but offering programs of nutrition, exercise, and beauty. Today massages and facials are by far the most popular spa treatments in America, but more recently, these spas have begun to adopt numerous new programs in areas such as meditation and spiritual communication.

In Thailand the American and European spa techniques have successfully been blended together to giveclients “the best of both worlds,” with unparalleled value for money. The “Nantra de Boutique,” Spa (038.414.696), is a good example, with branches in Bangkok, Phuket and Chiangmai; see www.pattayaopasis.com

Laser treatments are ideal for both men and women and operate by producing pulses of high-energy light that are then applied to the targeted area of skin or hair. In skin treatment the laser is used to eliminate the damaged skin and promotes the growth of new tighter and smoother skin in its place.

For hair removal, lasers have proven to be one of the most effective ways of removing unwanted hair all over the body. Some of the most common areas that are treated for hair removal include the bikini area, face, arms, legs, chest, and the back. It is interesting to note that laser hair removal works best on individuals with dark hair.

Laser treatment is regularly used to treat acne and the scarring it causes, so treatments for acne include skin resurfacing and photo rejuvenation, so laser acne treatment is ideal for those who have sun damage, scarring, and uneven skin tones.

Wrinkle treatment such as excessive laugh lines, crow’s feet, and other lines on the skin of the face and neck are often issues that many women and even men seek to treat. Laser usage is effective in this area because it allows the skin to be treated without having to undergo invasive medical procedures. If you have wrinkles that are average or moderate in their appearance then laser wrinkle treatment can work wonders.

Laser treatment is often conducted in medical clinics or even some upscale spas, and a local anaesthetic and sedative will be provided to numb the area(s) that will be treated; – (this helps you remain relaxed throughout the procedure). Most laser treatments take place over the course of 2 – 6 weeks and are followed up by routine check-ups, however most patients are able to see results within 24 hours.

Before laser treatment, meet with a doctor or laser treatment professional, who can help you determine if laser treatment is right for you, and what methods of treatment would be best. Remember to be realistic in your expectations, after all laser treatment is a treatment and cannot correct all imperfections.

You can get quality laser advice and treatment at the following specialized clinics Apex, Romrawin, Meko and Rinrada as well as Bangkok Hospital Pattaya.

Your body needs certain foods to stay strong and healthy.
Other foods, if eaten too often, contribute to many illnesses. Here are some guidelines:
• Eat 6-11 servings a day of breads or grains, like rice, pasta, tortillas, or cereal.
• Eat 3-5 servings a day of vegetables, like carrots, cabbage, tomatoes, broccoli, or peas.
• Eat 2-4 servings a day of fruits, like apples, peaches, mangos, bananas, or fruit juice.
• Eat 2-3 servings a day of meat, fish, beans, eggs or nuts, for protein.
• Eat 2-3 servings a day of dairy products like yogurt, cheese, or milk.
• Cut down on alcohol, fatty foods such as butter, grease, or oil, and “junk food” like chips or candy.

Step 2: Stay physically active.

Regular physical activity helps people:

• live longer and feel better throughout their lives
• be stronger and more flexible
• build strong bones and fight osteoporosis
• prevent depression
• strengthen your ability to fight off illness
• maintain a healthy body weight

It is best to get at least one half hour of exercise three times a week, but any amount of exercise is better than none at all! If you do not want
to go jogging or swimming, try going for a brisk walk with a friend, working vigorously in the yard, or riding your bike to work

Step 3: A healthy mind is part of a healthy body.

When you are in a good state of mind, you make good decisions for yourself about your job, your lifestyle,
and your health. Here are some things you can do to keep your mind healthy:
• Reduce stress in your life. Try the ideas to reduce stress.
• Make time in your life for things that are fun. Make a list of activities you like and make sure you have at least a little
time each day for doing something you enjoy.
• Get enough sleep. Most people get too little sleep. Being sleepy reduces your concentration, increases mood swings,
and causes many car accidents.
• Get help if you feel depressed or anxious for more than a few days at a time. Talk with a friend or your health care provider
for some help.

Step 4: Keep your mind and body free of harmful drugs and alcohol.

• Tobacco causes more health problems than any other drug and is the most addictive, most widely used. Cutting down or stopping the use of cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco can save your health and save your money.

• Too much alcohol is definitely dangerous, causing liver damage, fetal alcohol syndrome, and accidents. The tricky question is, how much is too much?

Street drugs like marijuana, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, or pain pills not prescribed for you are dangerous to your health. Street drugs can be diluted with substances that are harmful to you. People often put themselves in dangerous situations to get street drugs. If you are using street drugs and would like to stop but are having difficulty, talk to your health care provider.

Step 5: Practice safe living habits

Did you know…
• Accidents and injuries are the fifth leading cause of death in the US; among children, they are the second leading cause of death.

• Women under 35 are more likely to die in motor vehicle accidents than from any other cause.
• Accidents in the home cause thousands of permanent injuries every year.
• Here are some steps you can take to stay safe:
• The most common accidents are fires, falls, and drownings. Help yourself and your family to stay safe by

1. installing smoke detectors,
2. having your vision checked
3. learning to swim.

• Stay safe on the road.
1. Wearing a seatbelt dramatically reduces your chances of death in an accident.
2. Keep children under 30 kgs in an appropriate car seat or booster.
3. Do not ride with someone who has been drinking or taking drugs.
4. Wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or motorcycle.

• Find protection from people who are violent or threatening in your life.
• Wash your hands regularly to avoid the spread of germs.

Step 6: Get regular health care.

• Many people think they only need to see a doctor when they are sick or injured. The truth is, health care providers are also experts at preventing illnesses and finding and treating problems before you ever feel sick.

• Find a health care provider who works WITH you.
• Know what diseases you are at risk of and attend regular screenings for them.
• Get yourself and the children in your family immunized against life-threatening illnesses

If you often find yourself struggling with the effects stress has on your physical and emotional well-being, here are five steps for stress relief.

1) Admit to yourself that something is stressing you out, as this is the first step in letting go of it. By acknowledging that an extra activity is putting more added stress on an already hectic lifestyle, you can balance out the pressures and make decisions that are right for you.

2) If you’ve just had a huge argument with your boss, or your son’s school called to discuss his habit of jumping around in the classroom, then just laugh. When you’re stressed, even the smallest annoyance is one more added pressure that you didn’t want, so forget about it for a while. Grab a good friend or family member and watch a funny movie together, because more laughter means the more mood enhancing endorphins you’ll produce.

3) You should be getting 7 to 8-hours of sleep every night, because if you’re already exhausted when you go in to work, you’ll be less likely to be able to handle more stress.

4) Having small children and sleeping through the night might not be possible, so if you are at home, try napping when they do, as even half an hour will do wonders for your stress levels, and your patience.

5) Do something that makes you feel good; Get a massage, buy a new novel and read it when everyone else is asleep, do some exercise, dine out and have a few drinks with your best friend, watch a movie or whatever brings else brings you happiness.
